Description
Quiet canal just off the Grand Canal in Venice, Italy. The scene is in the Santa Croce part of Venice
The history of this unique city dates back to around 400 AD. Early people came here to escape barbarians that were coming down. Over time the area developed into what became Venice, eventually becoming a major maritime power and one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
The area these people originally came to was marsh land. When the Venetians started to build on these marshes, they drove in wooden stakes into them. On these stakes, wooden platforms were constructed and buildings were built on these platforms. Over time millions of wooden stakes were driven into the marsh land with wood for it coming not only from the countryside but also from forests hundreds of miles away. The scale of their undertaking is amazing and today the efforts of the Venetians are enjoyed by over 20 million tourists a year.
