Description
Spanning the Arno River in the city of Florence, Italy, the Ponte Vecchio is a landmark in that historic city. The first bridge on that site was made mention in 996AD. It was destroyed by a flood in 1117 and reconstructed after that only to be swept away again in 1333. Two central piers are said to have remained, It was rebuilt in 1345.
For my first day in Florence it was completely overcast and a washout with rain throughout the day. Rainy skies can lead to dramatic skies at sunrise and sunset if the clouds start to break up at that time. I hoped for the best as I headed out in the early morning pre-dawn hours. As the first light appeared, I could see the clouds breaking and I knew that if the distant horizon had a clearing there could be the potential for real drama. Well the wait paid off as over the following 20 to 30 minutes one dramatic scene after another unfolded before me waiting for me to capture it.
In this one, dramatic rays from the sun could be seen rising up from just above the center of the Ponte Vecchio.
