Description
Exterior of a house in Burano, Italy. Burano, an island in the Venetian lagoon is known for its brightly colored homes.
Burano is a fishing village dating back to Roman times. It was founded when the people of Altino fled it after being invaded by barbarians.
Legend has it that the houses were painted in different colors so that fisherman returning home centuries back could see their home through the fog. The colors have remained with the families for centuries and today if one wished to paint his house, he must send a request to the government.
